Stompa WIP 3

Supa gatler finished! Just one arm and the head left now. Maybe I’ll get to paint something else next week… 🤞

It took a while, but I don’t regret painting the hazard stripes on the electrical cables. I’m trying to find ways to implement yellow (Citadel Avland Yellow) as a tertiary colour in my scheme, and I feel this fit the bill quite nicely.

For the supa gatler, I airbrushed on a basecoat of Vallejo chainmail, followed by inks in violet, blue, and black. The metallic basecoat shines through and makes the inks come off as slightly reflective.

I’ve rushed through the mega choppa arm, it’s not quite finished yet, but I’m close.

I grabbed some masking tape and the airbrush and tried my hand at making some dirt rings on the hydraulics. As the piston retracts all the dirt on it gets pushed away by the cylinder seal, it all ends up collecting at the point where the piston last retracted to. I believe they turned out reasonably realistic, if not a bit too conservative. Maybe some streaking oil on the pistons simulating a leaking seal would improve the look further?

I’ve found that stippling burnt sienna oil paint with a small round and worn out brush works really well as a rust texture. The colour is perfect and the slightly grainy texture looks like porous iron oxide. I’m still using the Dirty Down Rust and Vertigis, but nothing is quite like my oil paints, it’s a dream to use both together.

On a side note, the pictures of the deff kannon came out more yellow than expected. The iPhone 15 camera really blows out the brightness and tunes down the colour on these pictures. I tried to correct for it on the cover photo and choppa to a point where I think it looks close enough. Might be time for a new camera app or maybe a real camera with manual focus 😗

Next post will hopefully be the last on this stompa! 😃
